CUSA0023 The Diary of Tai Po River, a Scientific Approach 大埔河的日記(科學編)

The course is a one day course (with 8 contact hours) covering the science aspects of pollution, it will be part of a theme based programme initiated by HKAGE on environmental pollution. The main theme of the course will be the introduction of the key concepts in environmental pollution and practical techniques of field biology investigation. Classroom-based teaching on concepts in pollution will be supplemented with tutorials and laboratory sessions. The course will be delivered in Cantonese, while printed material will be written in English or Chinese.

Objectives of the course:
1. To cultivate the spirit of intellectual exploration in Science concepts related to environmental pollution, in particular stream and water pollution; and
2. To enhance and further develop gifted students’ investigation, research and problem solving skills through Inquiry-Based Learning.

本課程為資優教育學苑一個以環境污染為主題的課程的科學部份。課程共八小時,其定位在於從科學的角度去介紹環境污染。課程的重點為環境污染的主要概念及與環境生物學有關的實驗技巧。教學模式為課堂授課輔以導修課、實驗課、及野外考察等。課程以中文授課,而課程講義則以英文或中文製備。

課程目標:
1. 以水質污染及河流污染為主體內容以培育學員對於與環境污染有關的科學概念的學術探究精神;及
2. 通過探究式學習去培育及提升資優學生的探究及解難技巧。

Learning outcomes:   Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. Experience local habitats affected by pollution in HK through a scientific field study in Tai Po River;
  2. Evaluate scientifically the different treatments HK government can do to recover polluted sites; and
  3. Realize how environmental protection works can bring values to the society.

* Academy unit will be awarded to students who satisfied all the course requirements and have satisfactory performance.

Application method:   Submit application to Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education
Others:   Participant who satisfied all the course requirements and has satisfactory performance will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by HKAGE.
