49 CUHK Science Scholars Listed in 2022 World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University

49 scholars in the Faculty of Science at CUHK have been named on the 2022 World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University in various disciplines in which 39 scholars are on the career-long list, 36 scholars are on the single-year list.

Two of the CUHK Science scholars were among the Top 50 Most Cited in their sub-fields of research. Professor SONG Chunshan, Dean of Science and Wei Lun Professor of Chemistry, was ranked 18th out of around 7,700 scientists in the field of “Energy”, and Professor MAK Chung Wai Thomas, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, was ranked 49th among 1,400 scholars in the field of “Inorganic & Nuclear Chemistry”, based on their career-long citation impact.

CUHK and Great Bay University Forge Partnership in Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research (JIAMGER)

CUHK and Great Bay University (GBU) joined hands to establish Great Bay University – The Chinese University of Hong Kong Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research (JIAMGER) on 8 December 2022.

On behalf of the two universities, Professor Rocky TUAN, CUHK Vice-Chancellor and Professor TIAN Gang, President and GBU President signed a Memorandum of Agreement on the joint institute. The agreement symbolises the solidification of a strategic alliance between CUHK and GBU to implement the establishment plans of the JIAMGER, and to develop an international innovation and technology hub in the Greater Bay Area. With the new joint institute, it is envisioned that the concerted efforts from both sides would boost regional and national development at the forefront and applied research and nurture technological and academic talents for technology innovation.

Master’s and Doctoral Degrees Graduation Ceremony 2021-2022

On 25 November 2022, Professor Anthony CHAN, Pro-Vice-Chancellor officiated the Master’s and Doctoral Degrees Graduation Ceremony 2021-2022. It was our honour to have Professor Arthur CHENG, CUHK Honorary Fellow cum Adjunct Professor of the Earth System Science Programme, serving as our Guest of Honour, sharing his inspiring thoughts and advice with our graduates as they mark a milestone in their lives.

Professor LAM Hon Ming has been appointed as Chair of Consultation Committee of the Sustained Agriculture Development Fund

Professor LAM Hon Ming, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Life Sciences, has been appointed as the Chair of the Consultation Committee of the Sustained Agriculture Development Fund (SADF). SADF is one of the major funding schemes to support Hong Kong agriculture. The appointment is a recognition of Professor Lam’s decades of work at CUHK in the area of agriculture.

Five Science alumni have been awarded the 2022-2023 Croucher Study Awards to pursue PhD studies or receive postdoctoral training at world-renowned institutes overseas. They are CHEUNG Ho Yeuk Mark (Physics/ 2021), LAU King Heng (Earth System Science/ 2022), NG Kwan Yeung Ken (Physics/ 2017), TSE Man Kei Constance (Cell and Molecular Biology/ 2022) and YANG Tongou Tom (Mathematics/ 2015; MPhil/ 2017).

Four of these Croucher Scholars reminisced about their lives at CUHK, and shared their prospective developments after receiving the prestigious awards.

CUHK Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2022

On 15 October 2022, the Faculty was excited to greet all our visitors at the Information Day 2022. We had organised a number of talks, tours, sharing sessions, and consultations to our prospective students and their families and friends.

In our Info Day video, we also took the opportunity to acknowledge five newly admitted students who obtained a perfect score based on their Best 5 Subjects! Congratulations to these new members of CUHK Science, and we hope that all our students will make the most of their time at our Faculty in both their studies and whole-person development.

From Scientific Research to Social Impacts - Knowledge Transfer Project Fund (KPF) Info Session cum Talk

As the 2nd part of the 2022 Mini Impact Symposium Series, the Faculty was pleased to invite Dr. Elsie TSUI, Head of Social Innovation Team from the Office of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services (ORKTS), to deliver a webinar on introduction to social impacts and their relationship with academic research.

Dr. Tsui shared some worldwide examples of how underpinning scientific research deliverables have addressed social needs or how they have influenced policymaking. She also advised researchers to think about “So-what Questions” to link their research outcomes to impacts, in order to maximise the “reach and significance” of research impacts.

CUHK Innovation Day 2022

Prof. LU Xinhui presented her recent studies related to organic and perovskite solar cells.

Prof. WANG Ying shared how her new electrolyzer design can improve carbon usage.

Prof. NGAI To won 2nd Runner-up in the Elevator Pitch Competition.

CUHK Innovation Day was held successfully on 28 October 2022. The event aimed to inspire and encourage the CUHK community to continue to innovate for societal impact.

Professor LU Xinhui of the Department of Physics delivered an invited talk on “Learn to Fabricate High-performance Third-Generation Solar Cells with Grazing Incidence Scattering Techniques”, presenting the latest studies on the process-structure-device correlation of third-generation solar cells, such as organic and perovskite solar cells. Professor WANG Ying of the Department of Chemistry also shared her recent breakthrough in the development of a new catalyst and advanced electrolyzer for electrochemical carbon conversion at the invited talk of “Pathways Towards Carbon Neutral Chemical Industries”.

The first Elevator Pitch Competition was also held this year. TSSSU-funded companies delivered two-minute pitches introducing business ideas and innovative solutions in a bid to impress prospective investors. Congratulations to Professor NGAI To on winning 2nd Runner-up in the competition!

Women in Science: Yes We Can, featuring Professor Kim CHOW

On 2 December 2022, 27 Science students spanning across various disciplines of science at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels gathered for an exclusive interactive sharing session with guest speaker Professor Kim CHOW of the School of Life Sciences. The event, entitled “Women in Science: Yes We Can, Feat. Professor Kim CHOW”, aimed to share Professor Chow's own experience as a young science student keen on discovering her interests and solving problems in biology. Her candid recounting of how her dedication and efforts at various stages of her degree studies and then later in post-doctoral studies shaped her and enriched her “toolbox” as a researcher, and equipped her with the confidence and knowledge to pursue a career as an academic. Event moderator cum Chairperson of the Science Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Committee Professor Phillip YAM greatly appreciated Professor Chow's sharing, and he was happy to see students captivated by her sharing and asking a number of excellent questions.

Popular Science Special Lecture Series: How Nobel Prizes Are Won

The Popular Science Special Lecture Series “How Nobel Prizes Are Won” was held on 9 December 2022 to introduce the award-winning scientific discoveries.

Professor Jerome HUI from the School of Life Sciences introduced the basic concepts in evolutionary biology, findings in paleogenomics, and techniques used in the modern genomics era. Professor WANG Dajun from the Department of Physics introduced the experiments of the three Nobel laureates to test Bell inequalities and how their results changed our understanding on quantum mechanics. Professor Dennis NG from the Department of Chemistry highlighted the seminal work of the three Nobel laureates. We hope the lectures might stimulate your enthusiasm for science.

The Symposium on Statistics and Risk Management 2022

The Symposium on Statistics and Risk Management 2022 was successfully held on 9 and 10 December 2022 via Zoom. On the occasion of celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Department of Statistics, the symposium gathered internationally renowned scholars to present state-of-the-art research topics in statistics and risk management in order to facilitate an exchange of ideas.

More than 100 participants from local and overseas institutions attended the virtual symposium, and 10 distinguished speakers shared their research output in statistics and risk management. Professor SONG Xinyuan, Chairperson of the Department of Statistics, officiated the opening ceremony and delivered the welcome speech.
