Seven Distinguished Alumni Share Their Visions and Values to Better the World

The Faculty was honoured to have seven inaugural Science Faculty Distinguished Alumni Award recipients to give a talk at Science Faculty Distinguished Alumni Lectures on Saturday, 20 April 2024. Over 70 guests, including Professor Alan CHAN, Provost of CUHK, and members of CUHK Science, our alumni, students and staff, and secondary students and teachers attended the lectures to congratulate and learn from our award recipients.*

The speakers recalled their meaningful memories at CUHK and how they have continued their passions in pursuing excellence in Science, education or serving society. The audience were especially intrigued by personal stories of the profound influence that CUHK Science teachers had on the award recipients and how it inspired them to persist in their mission, as well as their fond memories of student life on campus. Furthermore, all speakers shared with the audience how they developed their careers with a passion to better the world.

Science Faculty 60th Anniversary Distinguished Science Lecture Series

As part of the Faculty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, CUHK Science hosted a series of Science Faculty 60th Anniversary Distinguished Science Lectures featuring talks by world-renowned scientists and experts in different fields.

On 20 March 2024, the Faculty was especially delighted to invite Professor Sir Gregory WINTER, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry (2018), to deliver a Distinguished Science Lecture entitled “The Development of Antibodies and Antibody Mimics as Pharmaceutical Drugs”. Professor Sir Gregory also engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue with our talented research postgraduate students during the poster presentation session.

CUHK-GBU Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research (JIAMGER)

Science Faculty CUHK-GBU Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research (JIAMGER) team visited Great Bay University (GBU) in Dongguan on 10 January 2024. JIAMGER team met the principal investigators and administrative heads from GBU to discuss the action plan of JIAMGER.


Science Faculty Garners Five Medals at 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva

The groundbreaking inventions by CUHK Science teams from the Department of Chemistry and Department of Physics have been recognised and honoured with five medals at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (Salon International des Inventions de Genève). This remarkable achievement reflects the dedication, brilliance, and innovativeness of our faculty members and their teams. Science Faculty Scientist awarded Silver Medal from in the 14th International Invention Fair of the Middle East 2024

Professor NGAI To, Assistant Dean (Research) and Professor from the Department of Chemistry, has been awarded the Silver Medal from in the 14th International Invention Fair of the Middle East (IIFME) (4-7 February 2024), Kuwait for his project namely “Novel Sustainable Inorganic Hollow UV Filters for Cosmetic Applications”. IIFME is the largest specialized exhibition of inventions and innovations in the Middle East and is deemed the second-most significant international exhibition in the world.


Science Faculty Delegation for The University of Manchester and University of Warwick in March 2024

The Science Faculty Delegation, comprised of 14 Faculty members and the Faculty Scientific Officer, visited The University of Manchester (7-8 March) and the University of Warwick (11-12 March) to learn about their best practices for the Research Excellence Framework – a national system for assessing the quality of research at UK higher education institutions. The trip also laid a solid foundation for the development of research collaborations and new joint education programmes between CUHK and the two UK institutions.


JC STEM Lab of Astronomical Instrumentation Officially Opens

On 18 December 2023, CUHK held an inauguration ceremony to express gratitude and appreciation to The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to establish five Jockey Club (JC) STEM Labs at CUHK. Professor YAN Renbin of the Department of Physics is leading the JC STEM Lab of Astronomical Instrumentation which focuses on mapping the motion and distribution of galactic gases to understanding the structure of the galaxy and formation of stars.

Dr. John Alexander WRIGHT Received “Educational Impact - Gold Award” at the Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo 2023

Dr. John Alexander WRIGHT of the Department of Statistics attended the poster presentation at the Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo 2023 held on 5 December 2023, and received the “Educational Impact - Gold Award” for his poster entitled “Transforming Teaching Statistics to Non-Background Students through Bespoke Training - Lessons from Five TAs”. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Statistics and Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR).

Growing Hope: Engaging Global Stakeholders towards Sustainable Future

In November 2023, Professor Amos TAI of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme got the chance to attend the UN Climate Change Conference in Dubai, commonly referred to as COP28, in his capacity as a member of the board of governors of Friends of the Earth (HK). He shared his experience in detail in an article in CUHK in Focus, emphasising that such international conferences can spread messages of hope by sharing powerful and innovative means to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.

Professor YANG Hongfeng - On Formidable Quest to Forecast Earthquakes

A recent interview with Professor YANG Hongfeng of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme by the magazine “Scientific Chinese” gave a rare glimpse into how Professor Yang’s hometown – Ninghai city in Liaoning Province – inspired him to pursue a career as a scientist on a quest for reliably forecast earthquakes, minimise catastrophic tolls on human lives and property and beyond.

Filling the World with Love and Care: Audio Explainer on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Latest Research Breakthrough

Recently, Professor Edwin CHAN of the School of Life Sciences was invited by RTHK’s radio programme “Hashtag Hong Kong” to explain what is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the disease mechanism, and the path to clinical trial on a group of biological drugs that may slow down the progression of the disease. Civility, Compassion, and Change for Good: SURGING TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE SUCCESS - Carson LAU

During the four years of undergraduate studies at CUHK, besides coursework that contribute towards meeting degree requirements, there are many opportunities for student development, such as going on exchange and taking part in internships. The Faculty is glad to invite Carson LAU, current Earth System Science student, to give tips on preparing for exchange, and also insights from his exchange studies at University of Helsinki in Finland during the spring of 2023.

QFRM Student awarded the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence 2022/23

TSANG Chi Pang Andy (right), a year 2 student in Quantitative Finance and Risk Management Science Programme, has received the CUHK Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarships for Excellence 2022/23.

The Scholarship was established in the 2021-22 academic year. A maximum of eight scholarships of HK$50,000 each are given out to Year 1 students on the basis of excellent academic achievements at entrance, academic results at CUHK, communications skills and a track record of distinguished leadership and non-academic performance.


STAT PhD Student Received the JSM 2024 Paper Award

WU Zhihao (Statistics PhD Year 4), who is supervised by Professor SONG Xinyuan, has received the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM) 2024 Paper Award from the American Statistical Association (ASA) Biometrics Section.

Undergraduate Research on Super Typhoon Published in Journal of Geophysical Research

Research on super typhoon Mangkhut (2018) carried out by undergraduate alumnus, LAU King Heng, from the Earth System Science Programme (ESSC), has been recently published in the Journal of Geophysical Research (Atmosphere).

King Heng fondly recalled his time at ESSC, “Being an undergraduate student at ESSC is genuinely one of the most fruitful and memorable experiences. The curriculum provided me with the necessary knowledge and technical skills to pursue postgraduate research. Most importantly, the research opportunities and guidance that I received as a STARS student allowed me to experience what it’s like to work as a researcher.”

King Heng started researching typhoons since his undergraduate years at CUHK, in collaboration with international research groups such as those from National Taiwan University, Columbia University, US. He is now a PhD student at the Imperial College London, UK, continuing his study on tropical cyclone physics.

STAT Alumnus Dr. SHEN Guohao received HKSS – John Aitchison Prize in Statistics, 2024

Statistics alumnus Dr. SHEN Guohao (currently an Assistant Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University), who was supervised by Professor LIN Yuanyuan, was awarded the HKSS – John Aitchison Prize in Statistics, 2024. The Prize was established in 2022 by the Hong Kong Statistical Society (HKSS), to honour the distinguished career and contributions of Professor John AITCHISON (1926-2016), Chair Professor of Statistics at the University of Hong Kong between 1976 and 1989, and founder and first President of the HKSS. The objective of the Prize is to reward excellence in PhD research, as demonstrated by a research paper, in Statistics or a closely related discipline.

Science Faculty Delegation for CUHK Postgraduate Info Session in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Professor NGAI To, Assistant Dean (Research) led the Faculty team comprising Professors Tony SIT and Ben CHAN of Department of Statistics, to join the CUHK Graduate School Outreach Visit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 20 January 2024. The Science Faculty Postgraduate Programmes Info Session was also organised to offer consultation and in-person interview to prospective students.


Counsellor Fly-in Programme 2024

Prof. AU Wing Ngor Shannon (Assistant Dean), Prof. CHAN Kwok Wai, and Dr. Erika KWEK represented CUHK Science at the Faculty Fair on CUHK campus on 14 March 2024, during which they met with counsellors and teachers of secondary schools from Azerbaijan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Vietnam and South Africa were present.


Get Career-Ready with CUHK Science!

To facilitate Science students’ ongoing preparation for their careers, the Faculty organised the Science Career Fair 2024 on 20 March 2024, with over 20 invited companies promoting their diverse career opportunities and graduate programmes. In addition, the Faculty also arranged a number of career and professional development activities in March. The Faculty would like to express gratitude to all participating companies, guest speakers and alumni who returned to CUHK Science to share their wisdom and tips with young students.

Science alumni, friends and family enjoyed a memorable and educational hiking experience at the Science Alumni Hiking Trip on 23 March 2024. The Faculty invited a guest tour guide and also our Biology alumnus, Dr. LAU Tai Wai David (00/GS/BIOL), Curator of the Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium, School of Life Sciences, CUHK, to explain and showcase the plant species located at Tai Wan Village in Sai Kung.

The Faculty had the pleasure of inviting Ms. Sarah TONG, former investment banker turned entrepreneur and educator, to conduct a sharing as part of our annual Women in Science event, during which she emphasised that science students should identify the sorts of transferrable skills that their training in sciences has provided them, for these could be the sorts of skills sought after by employers regardless of industry, thus significantly expanding the pool of potential career options for science students.

Faculty Award Ceremony 2024

Joy and laughter filled the hall at the Faculty Award Ceremony 2024 on 13 April 2024, when a gathering of Science teachers, students, alumni, as well as family and friends, celebrated the achievements of our teachers and students. In his opening remarks, Faculty Dean Professor SONG Chunshan congratulated the award recipients, and hope that they will, in their own ways, use their scientific training to make our world a better place.

In response to the request from Hong Kong Chinese Women’s Club College, Professor YANG Hongfeng of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme organised a workshop “Introduction to Seismic methods and instruments” and also introduced the Earth and Environmental Sciences Programme on 25 November 2023 for more than 50 students.

The Symposium on Data Science and Risk Analytics 2023 cum CUHK 60th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming was held by the Department of Statistics on 9 December 2023 in celebration of the 60th Anniversary of CUHK and Faculty of Science. The event was a unique blend of two significant occasions: a symposium that showcased cutting-edge research, thought-provoking discussions, and visionary insights, and an alumni homecoming that rekindled cherished memories, strengthened bonds, and celebrated the accomplishments of our esteemed alumni. The Department was delighted to invite 11 outstanding alumni to return to their alma mater and deliver talks at the symposium.


The 9th Asian Conference on Colloid and Interface Science

The 9th Asian Conference on Colloid and Interface Science (ACCIS 2023), chaired and organised by Professor NGAI To of the Department of Chemistry, was successfully held between 12-15 December 2023. The three-day conference attracted over 200 overseas researchers from more than 10 countries and was also very well-received by local researchers.
