Joint New Student Orientation for IDADM and ASEIDM
The Joint New Student Orientation for the Interdisciplinary Data Analytics & X Double Major Programme (IDADM) and the Aerospace Science and Earth Informatics & X Double Major Programme (ASEIDM) was held successfully on 21-22 September 2024. This two-day orientation brought together 50 students from CUHK and 54 students from CUHK(SZ), aiming to foster collaboration, introduce students to their new academic environment, and build a sense of community among the participants. The event took place at both the CUHK campus and CUHK(SZ) campus.

Science Faculty All-Staff Meeting 2024
|
|
The Faculty held an All-Staff Meeting on 29 November 2024. After a warm welcome to all new staff members, Professor SONG Chunshan, Dean of Science, provided an overview of the Faculty's recent developments. He also invited the Associate and Assistant Deans to share updates on each of the seven strategic areas of the Faculty.
The Dean expressed gratitude to all staff for their dedicated efforts over the past year and wished the retiring staff a joyful new chapter in their lives.

CUHK and GBU Jointly Inaugurate GBU-CUHK Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research (JIAMGER)
|
|
CUHK and the Great Bay University (GBU) held the inauguration ceremony for the "GBU-CUHK Joint Institute of Advanced Materials and Green Energy Research" (JIAMGER) on 26 November 2024. The CUHK delegation included Vice-Chancellor Professor Rocky TUAN, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor SHAM Mai Har, Dean of Science Professor SONG Chunshan, and over 20 faculty and students from the Faculty of Science.
The two universities established their intention to establish JIAMGER back in 2021, inviting Professor SONG Chunshan to serve as the Institute's inaugural director.

CUHK Science Scholars Showcase Innovative Tech & Environmental Research in Polar Regions
|
|
A number of scholars from the Faculty joined the International Symposium on Polar Sciences – The 40th Anniversary of CHINARE, in Shanghai between 29 October and 1 November 2024. We are glad to see our scholars from the School of Life Sciences and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences contributing towards the University’s role in the global polar research community.

Four CUHK Science Scholars Selected for China’s 41st Antarctic Expedition

On 1 November 2024, the University participated in a send-off event of China’s 41st Antarctic expedition. The Faculty is excited that a new chapter in polar science is being written with the help from a six-member team of scientists from Hong Kong, four of whom hail from the Faculty of Science.

Professor YAU Shing Tung Donates to Further Mathematics Development, and
Forges Closer CUHK-Tsinghua Research Ties
|
|
On 24 October 2024, CUHK received a generous donation of US$1 million from Professor YAU Shing Tung, Dean of Qiuzhen College, Tsinghua University, to establish the “Chiu Chin Yin Early Career Professorship in Mathematics” under CUHK’s The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSCI) and Department of Mathematics. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was also signed between CUHK and Tsinghua University to strengthen collaboration in nurturing talent, teacher exchanges and scientific research.

[Obituary] In Memory of Dr. YUNG Kung Hing
Dr. YUNG Kung Hing passed away on 2 December 2024. Dr. Yung graduated from the Department of Chemistry of Chung Chi College in 1959. He obtained his degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of California, Riverside in USA in 1965 and 1968 respectively. He then joined the University of California, Davis to conduct research in plant sciences. In 1969, Dr Yung returned to Hong Kong to serve as Lecturer and Chairman of the Department of Biology of CUHK. Dr Yung retired in 1996 and has since continued to serve CUHK as a Senior College Tutor of Chung Chi College.

[Obituary] In Memory of Professor GU Ming-Gao
Professor GU Ming-Gao passed away on 14 December 2024. He served as the Graduate Division Head of Department of Statistics from 2010 to 2013.
Professor Gu was a renowned statistician. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Fudan University in 1982 and his PhD in statistics from Columbia University in 1987. After serving as an Assistant Professor at Columbia University for two years, he joined McGill University, initially as Assistant Professor and later as Associate Professor. In 1998, he joined CUHK, dedicating nearly 20 years of his career here until his retirement in 2017.

To start a new journey - The first student joining the CUHK-University of Edinburgh Dual Degree Programme
|
|
Andy TSANG is the first student admitted to the CUHK-University of Edinburgh Dual Degree Programme (DDP). Currently a Year 3 student studying Quantitative Finance and Risk Management Science (QFRM), Andy aims to earn a BSc in QFRM from CUHK, and BSc in Mathematics and Business from Edinburgh in two years’ time.
Before his departure, Andy shared with us why he wanted to join the DDP and how he was preparing himself. We look forward to seeing him having meaningful experiences on his new journey!

CUHK Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships 2023/24
|
|
Stanley LEE (PHYS), Isaac CHUNG (QFRM), and Jason SIU (QFRM) were honoured at the Presentation Ceremony of CUHK Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships for Excellence 2023/24 on 28 October 2024. Each of the honourees had demonstrated excellence academic achievements at entrance to the University, academic results at CUHK, communication skills, track record of distinguished leadership and non-academic performance. We are so proud that three out of the eight awardees are from the Faculty of Science.

International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2024
|
|
A genetic engineering team formed by 11 undergraduate students from the School of Life Science and the Department of Biomedical Engineering had been awarded a Gold Medal at the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) 2024 Grand Jamboree, held in Paris, France, between 23 - 26 October 2024. The Team was co-supervised by Professors Philos CHAN and Jacky NGO of the School Life Sciences and a professor from the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

RMSC Student Won the Second Runner-up in CUHK CPPC2024
Risk Management Science student Kim HUNG won the Second Runner-up in CUHK Capstone Project Presentation Competition 2024. The competition aims to provide a university-wide platform for students to showcase the outcomes of their year-long capstone projects to a much wider audience.

Two Science Students Awarded The Joseph Needham Merit Scholarship 2024
Genper WONG (Cell and Molecular Biology) and Warren TAM (Molecular Biotechnology) will be supported by The Joseph Needham Merit Scholarship 2024 in their upcoming further studies.

Genper was admitted to the STARS programme at Faculty of Science, and has already published three academic papers, with another paper currently in peer review. He has also been active in serving various professional societies, helping share his knowledge about neuroscience with fellow scientists and students.
|
|
|
|
|
As for Warren, originally from Malaysia, has found a vibrant and lively university life at CUHK. Besides having gained plenty of research experience working in three different laboratories, he has also represented Morningside College in a number of sports competitions, and also performed with his bandmates during the 2023 International Student Association Orientation Camp.
Congratulations to both students!

Three Science students Received Prestigious awards at the International Space Science and Scientific Payload Competition 2024
|
|
The team “Total Bacteria”, under the supervision of Professors NGAI To and KWOK Man Hin Patrick from the Department of Chemistry, was awarded the Silver Award in the "Creative Design of Space Experiment" stream under the University Group category and the special “Best Hardware Award” at the International Space Science and Scientific Payload Competition (iSSSP) 2024.

The Faculty is glad to invite Susana LAUW and Nelson KEI, graduates of the PhD in Food and Nutritional Sciences Programme at CUHK in 2023 and 2024 respectively, to share their passions in food and nutritional sciences and how their discoveries will better the world and result in great benefit for human health in the future.

CUHK Chemistry Alumnus Receives Top Award “CIC Medal” from Chemical Institute of Canada
Chemistry alumnus Professor SHAM Tsun Kong (currently Distinguished University Professor of the Department of Chemistry at University of Western Ontario) has been awarded the CIC Medal by the Chemical Institute of Canada. This Medal is is a mark of distinction and recognition to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the science of chemistry or chemical engineering in Canada.

The Faculty had the pleasure of welcoming back many of our senior alumni to campus for CUHK Alumni Homecoming 2024 on 23 November 2024. With the aim of providing a platform for early Science alumni from various disciplines and College affiliations to mingle and share their inputs on various facets of the Faculty's future developments, the Faculty hosted the inaugural Science Faculty Alumni Lunch Reception this year. The fun that day was not confined to the Reception, as the Faculty also hosted a booth at University Mall with science-themed games catering to alumni and their families and friends.

On 15 November 2024, the Faculty celebrated a major milestone for the Science doctoral and master's degree graduates of 2023-24. With the audience filled with bright and happy graduates and their guests, it was indeed an important milestone to be remembered for decades to come. Special thanks again to our Guest of Honour – Dr. Peter LEE, Chairman of The Joseph Needham Foundation for Science and Civilisation (Hong Kong), for delivering an inspiring speech to our audience and encouraging graduates to persevere and work hard to achieve success.

CUHK Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2024

|
On 19 October 2024, it was not only the annual CUHK Information Day for Undergraduate Admissions 2024, but it was also the day that broke the record of the latest occurrence of the ‘very hot weather’ warning issued by the Hong Kong Observatory. Nevertheless, everyone at the Faculty of Science was glad to greet and meet so many visitors who have come all the way to our beautiful campus on prospects of pursuing your studies with us. We are very thankful for the wonderful turn-out from our visitors, resulting in a full house for a great number of our talks.

Mental Health Workshop for Staff

|
Over 60 teachers and administrative staff from the Faculty of Science received a mental health training on 12 September 2024. The Faculty was honoured to have Professor Freedom LEUNG, Head of Shaw College and senior consulting clinical psychologist for the Office of Student Affairs and the Human Resources Office of CUHK, deliver the inaugural mental health workshop of this type for staff.
