This event marked the official transition from the Earth System Science (ESSC) and Environmental Science (ENSC) programmes to a new department aimed at advancing research and education in earth and environmental sciences.

CUHK Science Achieves Best Results Yet at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2025

Our talented teams from the School of Life Sciences, Department of Chemistry, and Department of Physics showcased their innovations at the 50th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva 2025. The Faculty achieved its best results ever at this prestigious event, winning a total of five awards: three Gold Medals with Congratulations of the Jury, one Gold Medal, and one Silver Medal.

Faculty Delegation 2024

The Faculty undertook a ground-breaking initiative and embarked on a delegation visit for enhancing our global footprint. The delegation visited Prague and Krakow in September 2024 and visited Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City in October 2024. This initiative marked an important step towards forging stronger ties and creating impactful partnerships in these territories and laid the groundwork for future endeavours.

Physics Project Team Showcases Exclusively Designed Educational Kits at “Hydrogen Zero Carbon STEAM Carnival”

On 22-23 February 2025, the Department of Physics participated in the “Hydrogen Zero Carbon STEAM Carnival” at the Construction Industry Council - Zero Carbon Park in Kowloon Bay. The project team has exclusively designed a brand-new educational kit on hydrogen fuel, which facilitates hands-on learning for secondary students, and raises awareness on climate change and achieving carbon neutrality.

Professor YANG Hongfeng Commented on Earthquake Risk of Japan's Nankai Trough

Professor YANG Hongfeng from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences spoke with local news media Sing Tao Daily, in which he commented on the seemingly alarming 75-82% likelihood of an earthquake of magnitude 8-9 at the Nankai Basin.

Professor Yang was also interviewed by Ming Pao and provided more detailed explanations on the immense difficulties scientists still face in making earthquake predictions.

Professor KWONG Fuk Yee Shares Insight on Infinite Future of Catalytic Chemistry

Professor Phillip YAM Published New Monograph on Finance

Professor YAM Sheung Chi Phillip from the Department of Statistics has recently published a book, named “Financial Data Analytics with Machine Learning, Optimization and Statistics”. Professor Yam also visited University of New South Wales as Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies in March 2025.

Chemistry Students Shine at Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong (AEII)

Congratulations to two PhD students in Chemistry - CHONG Hio Lam and YUEN Chun Bong - for their remarkable achievements at the 4th Asia Exhibition of Innovations and Inventions Hong Kong (AEII) 2024. Under the supervision of Professors NGAI To and KWOK Man Hin Patrick from the Department of Chemistry, the project “EcoShield - Cycle to Convenience” received the Gold Medal in the “Tools – Materials” category.


Three STAT PhD Students Received Funding from Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (CCMF) and PILOTS Lite Programme

Three Statistics PhD students have received funding for their start-ups: ZHU Yulin (supervised by Professor Tony SIT and Professor WONG Hoi Ying), YE Junyan (supervised by Professor WONG Hoi Ying), and DA Zhiyi (supervised by Professor Phillip YAM). They have secured HK$100,000 from the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund provided by the Hong Kong SAR Government, as well as HK$30,000 under the PILOTS Lite Programme from the CUHK PI Centre.

STAT Alumnus Professor ZHU Hongtu Received George W. Snedecor Award 2025

Professor ZHU Hongtu, an alumnus in statistics and currently a Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been awarded the George W. Snedecor Award for 2025.

The 13th Shiu-Ying Hu Day

The Shiu-Ying Hu Herbarium of the School of Life Sciences recently organised the 13th Shiu-Ying Hu Day, an annual event celebrating the legacy of Professor Shiu-Ying Hu and her remarkable contributions to botanical research. The event drew over 100 participants, including botanical artists from around the world, botanists, primary and secondary school students and members of the public, fostering a diverse exchange of ideas and creativity as well as showcasing the intersection of art and science in botany.

The 19th Lau Oi Wah Memorial Science Lecture Series

The 19th Lau Oi Wah Memorial Science Lecture Series was held successfully on 25 April 2025. Professor CHOI Pui Tung Gary (Department of Mathematics) introduced the application of origami and kirigami in science and engineering, and Professor TAN Yen Joe (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences) shared various types of volcanic eruptions and hazards.


Sci-by-the STARS

On 29 March 2025, for the first-time ever, the Faculty organised Sci-by-the STARS – an evening gathering for all Science alumni, students, staff and family. Special thanks goes out to Professor CHU Ming Chung and his crew of dedicated student helpers for organising a very informative telescope demonstration and guided viewing of a popular science video on astronomy.

Representatives from more than 30 companies, government units, start-ups and Co-op@CUHK joined Science Career Fair on 26-27 March 2025. We were very glad that some of our alumni did not only join the company exhibition with their companies, but also gave career sharings to our current students to paint a more vivid picture what building a career armed with a science degree may look like.

Dean’s Cup – Badminton 2025

Since introduction of Dean’s Cup during the Science Faculty 60th Anniversary, many Faculty members have been calling for more sports tournaments to gather our students, staff, and alumni for some friendly competition. On 22 February and 1 March 2025, teams gathered to vie for the coveted championship title of Dean’s Cup – Badminton 2025, and some teams even brought their own supporters to cheer them on!

Science Alumni Marine Reserve Hike

In January, we gathered our alumni and friends to enjoy the beautiful natural environment of Hong Kong at the Science Alumni Marine Reserve Hike. Participants learnt about the geological features at Cape D’Aguilar, while marvelling at the majestic works of art created by natural forces such as volcanic eruptions and erosion by wind and waves.

The International Symposium on Statistics and Risk Management 2024

The International Symposium on Statistics and Risk Management took place on 9 December 2024, hosted by the Department of Statistics. Six notable speakers were invited, including Professors FAN Yingying, Samuel KOU, LI Mingyao, MA Ping, YING Zhiling and ZHAO Hongyu, representing prestigious universities such as USC, Harvard, and Yale, to share their insights in the field.


The 2nd Greater Bay Area Earth & Environmental Sciences Young Scholars Symposium

The 2nd Greater Bay Area Earth & Environmental Sciences Young Scholars Symposium, organised by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, was successfully held at Sun Yat-sen University on 3-4 November 2024. Participants included representatives from Sun Yat-sen University, CUHK, HKU, PolyU, the Institute of Engineering Mechanics, and the China Earthquake Administration, among others.


School of Life Sciences Seminar Series

On 6 February 2025, Professor ZHANG Yuelin from Sichuan University visited the School of Life Sciences to deliver a seminar entitled “Salicylic Acid Biosynthesis and Signaling in Plants”. In the seminar, Professor Zhang introduced his groundbreaking new discovery of a novel biosynthetic pathway for salicylic acid biosynthesis.

On 20 February 2025, Professor FANG Fei Evandro from University of Oslo and Akershus University Hospital (Norway) delivered a fascinating seminar to the students about his excellent research in ageing. Professor Fang is actively promoting the research collaborations and student exchange between Hong Kong and Nordic groups.
