The Faculty of Science community gathered on 24 January 2026 to celebrate the achievements, curiosity, and innovative spirit of our students, teachers, alumni, and partners. This year’s ceremony saw our largest turnout in recent years, making it a truly memorable occasion.

CUHK Spin-off O-Spheres Limited Wins Bronze Award at Hong Kong Green Innovations Awards 2024

O‑Spheres Limited, a CUHK spin‑off founded in 2022 by Prof. NGAI To (Department of Chemistry) under the TSSSU scheme, received the Bronze Award at the 2024 Hong Kong Green Innovations Awards—part of the Hong Kong Awards for Environmental Excellence. The award recognises excellence in environmental sustainability and innovation.

Dr. John WRIGHT (PI) and Professor Phillip YAM Received the Bronze Award at the Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo 2025

Dr. John WRIGHT (Department of Statistics and Data Science) received the Bronze Award for the poster “Unlocking RPgs’ Potential as Excellent Peer Educators – Outcomes and Opportunities of the Stats4RPgs Framework” at the Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo 2025. The project is a collaboration with Centre for Learning Enhancement And Research (CLEAR).

Honours & Awards

Professor YANG Hongfeng and Professor YAU Chun Yip Received the Gifted Education Fund from the Education Bureau

Prof. YANG Hongfeng of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Prof. YAU Chun Yip of the Department of Statistics and Data Science have each received the Gifted Education Fund from the Education Bureau respectively for the projects entitled “China Aerospace Education Programme” and “Nurturing Future Risk Managers and Actuaries: An AI-powered Journey for Gifted Secondary Students”.

The Gifted Education Fund offers funding support for different organisations to provide off-school advanced learning programmes to expose gifted students to high quality and challenging learning experiences in their areas of talent.

Professor JIN Bangti Awarded the ICCM Silver Medal of Mathematics

Prof. JIN Bangti, Global STEM Scholar from the Department of Mathematics, has been awarded the ICCM Silver Medal of Mathematics at the 10^th International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians (ICCM) in Shanghai. The prize is awarded to individuals of Chinese descent under the age of 45, in recognition of their groundbreaking contributions to research in pure or applied mathematics.

Professor LYU Hairong and Professor ZHANG Xinglong of Department of Chemistry Published Research Articles in Nature

A recent research work from Prof. LYU Hairong’s group has been published in Nature, titled “Electrochemical defluorinative Matteson-type homologation reaction.” This work marks the first application of electrochemistry in the Matteson reaction, offering a proof-of-concept solution to overcome the limitations of traditional methods.

In Prof. ZHANG Xinglong’s recent Nature paper with Associate Prof. KOH Ming Joo from the National University of Singapore (NUS), they introduce a visible-light photocatalytic “atom-swapping” strategy that converts readily available oxetanes into valuable saturated four-membered pharmacophores via a ring-opening/ring-reconstruction sequence.

12 Science Undergraduates Receive Link University Scholarship 2025/26

QFRM Student Won Top Awards at Saudi Arabia Algorithmic Trading Challenge 2025

WONG Hung Sing Sam, a student from the Quantitative Finance and Risk Management Programme, has achieved remarkable success at the Saudi Arabia Algorithmic Trading Challenge 2025 organised by The Algo Challenge Association, and earned two major accolades:

• Winner of the Best Strategy Design Award
• 1st Runner-Up of the Best Return Award

STAT PhD Student Funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)

MIAO Jishuai, a PhD student in Statistics supervised by Prof. LIN Zhixiang, has received funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) under the Basic Research Scheme for PhD Students for his research project titled “Integrated Quantitative Modeling and Evaluation of Cell-Cell Communication and Gene Regulatory Networks from Spatial Multi-omics Data.”

Dean’s Cup – Football 2026

On 31 January 2026, eight teams of CUHK Science students, staff, and alumni played in the Dean’s Cup – Football 2026 tournament at Lingnam Soccer Pitch, Chung Chi College. The teams competed in the light rain with all their might, and everyone enjoyed the exhilarating friendly competition.

Women in Science – The Invisible Women and Their Dinosaurs

Science Faculty’s “Women in Science – The Invisible Women and Their Dinosaurs” had invited Dr. Natalia JAGIELSKA, Post-doctoral Fellow at Prof. Michael PITTMAN’s laboratory at the School of Life Sciences, to share untold tales of the contributions by women that had shaped and built the field of palaeontology on 30 January 2026. This event was jointly organised with the Diversity and Inclusion Office and Women Academics Sub-Committee.
