Science Faculty Distinguished Alumni Lectures, held on 12 June 2026, brought together students, teachers, staff, alumni, and the public for an inspiring exchange with three Science Faculty Distinguished Alumni Award recipients. From AI and data-driven innovation to entrepreneurship, leadership, and the meaning of learning, the speakers demonstrated how science can shape society and improve lives beyond the classroom. The event celebrated alumni achievements while encouraging participants to reflect on how their own learning can contribute to a more thoughtful, innovative, and impactful future.

Ocean Park and Coral Academy Join Hands to Deepen Collaboration in Marine ConservationThe Faculty welcomes the signing of a five-year Memorandum of Understanding between our School of Life Sciences’ Coral Academy and Ocean Park Corporation, strengthening collaboration in scientific research, education, capacity building and public engagement for marine conservation, with a special focus on corals. Together, CUHK and Ocean Park will advance a shared vision of safeguarding Hong Kong’s marine biodiversity and coral communities, while inspiring the next generation of scientists, educators and conservationists.

Four EES Researchers Participated in China’s 42nd Antarctic Expedition |

|
A team from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) took part in the 42nd Antarctic scientific expedition. Dr. CHEN Zhaoliang, together with two PhD students CHENG Long Hei and YANG Luming, travelled to Great Wall Station, where they contributed to on-going research and international collaboration efforts. Meanwhile, Dr. CAO Yiwen spent five months at Zhongshan Station, supporting scientific studies at this important outpost.

Dr. Natalia JAGIELSKA Shared Her Story from Jurassic Dreams to Consultancy
Dr. Natalia JAGIELSKA, Post-doctoral Fellow from the School of Life Sciences, was interviewed by the South China Morning Post, where she shared her journey from growing up in Poland and the United Kingdom as a dinosaur - loving Jurassic Park fan, to earning her PhD in palaeontology in Scotland, and eventually making Hong Kong her home as a post-doctoral researcher.

Recent Promotions for ASEIDM Programme
Recently, our teachers and students were featured in Ming Pao JUMP, where Prof. YANG Hongfeng and Prof. Francis TAM of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences highlighted the programme’s strengths and shared JUPAS interview advice, alongside insights from three Year 2 students on their learning experiences. The programme also appeared on RTHK’s Vibrant Hong Kong, introducing its vision, interdisciplinary approach, and aerospace initiatives, including CUHK‑1. Looking ahead, Professor Tam will present at Ming Pao’s Education Expo Main Stage Seminar on 12 July 2026 to further engage prospective students and parents.

A team led by Dr. Sam HAU with Prof. NGAI To and Prof. LI Hung Wing has been awarded three competitive courseware development grants for the following projects:
- SmartLab AI
- AI-Driven Interactive E-Learning for Chemistry
- Multimodal AI-Powered Assessment Platform
These projects will advance intelligent, AI-driven learning and hands-free laboratory assistance across chemistry and laboratory education.

A Modern Midas Touch
Modular Technology Converts Farm Waste into Green Fuel
Recently, two Science students joined hands to propose that waste can be converted to wealth, while helping to make our world greener and better, by entering into The 12th Hong Kong University Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition. The project “Farm-to-Fuel Greenshift: Novel system for biogas upgrading to green fuels,” ambitiously aims to convert waste biogas from agricultural and livestock waste into value-added products.

Statistics Students Awarded 1st Runner-up at VCCE 2025-26
A team of postgraduate students from the Department of Statistics and Data Science formed a project “AURORA Cryptalytics” and competed in the Vice Chancellor’s Cup of Student Entrepreneurship (VCCE) 2025-26. Thanks to their innovative and hard work, they clinched the 1st Runner-up title, a testament to their exceptional performance and entrepreneurial vision.

STAT MPhil Student Received the 2026 Joseph Needham Merit Scholarship Award
NGAN Yi Ho, an MPhil student in Statistics, has received the 2026 Joseph Needham Merit Scholarship Award. The scholarship provides an annual stipend of US$3,000 for up to four years to support his PhD studies in Statistics at Columbia University.

The seventh Institute of Mathematical Statistics Asia Pacific Rim Meeting (IMS-APRM) was hosted by the Department of Statistics and Data Science from 13 to 16 June 2026. The conference served as an outstanding global forum for scientific exchange and collaboration among researchers from Asia and the Pacific Rim, with the aim of fostering connections and partnerships between scholars in the region and their counterparts worldwide. The conference attracted over 500 scholars and researchers from around the world.

On 11 June 2026, the Faculty was honoured to invite Prof. Nigel BRANDON to visit CUHK to deliver a talk as part of the “Distinguished Science Lecture Series”. Prof. Nigel BRANDON, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Professor of Sustainable Development in Energy at Imperial College London, delivered a lecture entitled “Innovations in Electrochemical Technology for the Low Carbon Energy Transition”.

Prof. XIE Zuowei, a Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Emeritus Professor at CUHK Department of Chemistry, also delivered a Keynote Sharing.

The 32nd Symposium on Chemistry Postgraduate Research in Hong Kong was successfully held on 9 May 2026. The event brought together over 500 chemistry postgraduate students and faculty members from all UGC-funded universities, along with industry partners, to showcase the latest advancements in chemistry research. Prof. Armido STUDER from the University of Münster, Germany, was invited as the keynote speaker and actively engaged with participants throughout the symposium.

Public Seminars: Rethinking Wetlands |

On 20 April 2026, the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences hosted a symposium on wetland ecosystems, featuring two distinguished speakers: Prof. Stefano CANNICCI from the University of Florence and Prof. Ziggy MARZINELLI from the University of Sydney. Both are internationally recognised experts in coastal ecology and wetland conservation. The symposium was generously supported by the School of Life Sciences and the Office of Academic Links.

Alumni Company Visit – Ling Nam Medicine Factory
On 21 March 2026, over 30 CUHK Science alumni and friends enjoyed an eye-opening tour of Ling Nam Medicine Factory (HK) Limited. Supported by our Chemistry alumni, participants discovered how age-old medicine-making practices are modernized using the latest scientific principles and technologies. The visit offered a rare glimpse into the factory’s scientific management and GMP certification, ensuring excellent manufacturing and product quality for customers.

The inaugural “Dean’s Cup - Table Tennis 2026” was a spectacular success! We were thrilled to see our Science teachers, students, and alumni come together on 14 March 2026 to form 10 amazing teams, all vying for the championship honour. Beyond the fierce and exciting rallies, it was truly inspiring to witness the incredible sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed by everyone on the court.

Future of Ice: Climate Dialogues |

Prof. LIU Lin of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences participated in the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change’s “Future of Ice: Climate Dialogues” on 13 March 2026, where he shared insights from recent polar expeditions and discussed the accelerating impacts of glacier retreat on climate stability, sustainable cities, and communities during a multidisciplinary panel session.

This year, the Faculty not only welcomed our alumni back with fun booth games at the University Mall, but we also hosted a special lunch gathering at the Chung Chi College Staff Club for our graduates from the classes of 1993 to 2002.
