This course presents an integrated scientific introduction to our climate system, focusing on the physics and chemistry of the atmosphere and ocean. The course applies basic physical, chemical and mathematical principles to explain the history, current state and future projections of weather, climate, atmospheric composition, natural hazards, human-induced climate change, as well as their impacts on natural ecosystems and human society. Students will learn to build a simple climate model using computer software.

Learning outcomes:   This course will contribute to the understanding of the dynamics of the climate system, specifically the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and solid earth, as well as their interactions.
  Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
  1. explain how fundamental physical and chemical principles govern specific climate system processes;
  2. participate knowledgeably and intelligently in discussions of public policy related to global climate change and sustainable development;
  3. apply basic computer skills to understand and predict trends of the climate system.
