With a distinguished track record in plant cell biology, Prof. JIANG Liwen of the School of Life Sciences, Associate Dean (Research) of Science and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Life Sciences, has been awarded his second Areas of Excellence (AoE) project. He received over HK$87 million altogether from the Research Grants Council and matching support from CUHK under the 2025/26 exercise.

Professor ZHAN Yan Shares Insights on Volcanology

Prof. ZHAN Yan, Ng Yin Ying Assistant Professor of Geophysics from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, shared with Mainland-Hong Kong Academic Exchange magazine that combining advanced observation, numerical modelling, and AI technologies could soon make volcanic eruption forecasts as routine and accessible as weather forecasts.

Professor YANG Hongfeng Interviewed by BBC News on Earthquake Predictions

The world did not face a catastrophic end due to an expected earthquake and tsunami in July 2025. Professor Phillip YAM Now Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute 2025 and is Editor of Insurance: Mathematics and Economics

Prof. Phillip YAM of the Department of Statistics and Data Science has been elected as an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute 2025. This esteemed recognition highlights Prof. Yam’s significant contribution to the statistical profession.

Prof. Yam is also an editor of Insurance: Mathematics and Economics (IME). IME is a top journal in actuarial science that aims to strengthen the communication between individuals and groups who develop and apply research results in actuarial science.

Honoring a Nobel Luminary, Mentor, and Friend -
In Memory of Professor YANG Chen Ning (1922 - 2025)

With the passing of world-renowned scientist and the first Chinese Nobel laureate, Prof. YANG Chen Ning, the scientific world did not only lose one of its giants, but CUHK lost one of our beloved friends. On 30 October 2025, teachers, students, and Faculty staff led by Faculty Dean Prof. SONG Chunshan visited the Memorial Room at the History Gallery of the University Library to pay tribute to the late Prof. Yang. The Department of Physics has also looked back at its connection with Prof. Yang over the years and you are welcome to appreciate the special bond between Prof. Yang and CUHK.

Promising Postgraduate Talent Awarded for Creative Project on Sustainable Agriculture

Ms. Chiamaka Linda MGBECHIDINMA, a Year 4 PhD candidate in Cell and Molecular Biology, received the Special Award in Life Sciences at the 2025 Professor Charles K. Kao Student Creativity Awards. Under the mentorship of Prof. JIANG Liwen, she proposed innovative analyses to explore autophagy-mediated phytoremediation, aiming to advance sustainable agriculture.

Maggie & Winnie’s Experience of Joining Medicine by Design Programme at the University of Toronto

From 2 to 11 June 2025, PhD candidate Winnie YEUNG and postdoctoral fellow Dr. Maggie LEONG from the School of Life Sciences attended “Summer by Design” in Toronto. They appreciated the opportunity to gain practical knowledge and network with global scientists and industry leaders. They are eager to apply their insights to develop solutions for neurodegenerative patients.

EES Student Awarded Outstanding Student Presentation Award at 2nd GEOS-Chem Asia Meeting

YU Zheng, a Year 2 postgraduate student from the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences under the supervision of Prof. ZHAI Shixian, was awarded the Outstanding Student Presentation Awards (OSPA) at the 2nd GEOS-Chem Asia Meeting (GCA2) on 21 May 2025. Ms. Yu’s work is to investigate the relationship between aerosol optical depth (AOD) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) under a fast-changing environment in China.

Professor CHEUNG Yan Leung Stephen Appointed as new president of Saint Francis University

Prof. Stephen CHEUNG (MATH/82) has been appointed as the new president of Saint Francis University effective immediately, as announced by the university on 15 September 2025. The Saint Francis University, formerly Caritas Institute of Higher Education from 2011 to January 2024, was approved by the Education Bureau on 1 November 2024 to become a University of Applied Sciences (UAS).
