About FOS 60th Anniversary Logo

For sixty years, the Faculty of Science has been probing the unknown in the mysterious world of science. This logo is specially designed to celebrate the 60th anniversary.

The logo incorporates the six major units of the Faculty of Science: Earth and Environmental Sciences is represented by the globe. The gravitational field created by the globe signifies the invisible forces and interactions governing the universe, which are the topics studied in Physics. The test tubes, the most iconic laboratory glassware used in Chemistry, and the bar-chart, a common and popular choice to present categorical data in Statistics, enclosed by the number “0”, are shaped to resemble the double helical pattern of DNA. The three test-tubes and the three bars form three base pairs, and are correctly colored (red with blue, and green with yellow) to indicate the specific pairing of the four base pairs of the DNA. DNA is the building block of life, the foundation of Life Sciences. Lastly, as Mathematician Hermann WEYL once said, “Mathematics is the science of the infinite,” an infinity symbol is merged within the number “60” to represent the study of Mathematics. The infinity symbol encompasses all the other icons, indicating the knowledge in mathematics is essential across all the scientific disciplines.

The icons representing the six units are closely intertwined with each other, symbolising the multidisciplinary cooperation in scientific research. The infinity symbol also signifies that there are still endless mysteries in science waiting to be discovered and solved. The Faculty will continue to stay innovative and inspiring for further generations of scientists.
